Mary gives birth to Jesus away from home in a manger because of a census. Mary is in the city of David, in public, very close to full-term with child, and most likely very uncomfortable both physically and socially. Even more, I’m sure a manger was not on the top of Mary’s list of places to spend the first night with her newborn. Yet, it was better than nothing, and Jesus, Mary, and Joseph were provided for. Jesus’ entrance into this world is in humble circumstances. God’s story is going according to plan, including Jesus spending the first night in a manger.
